I first discovered Jonny and Kenny in 1997 at my local disc store in Paris. There was a “blues-rock” section where we could listen to Buddy Guy, Jimmy Thackery or Coco Montoya’s last albums. I heard of Jonny and Kenny at the same time. “Lie to me” (1997) and “Ledbetter heights” (1995) were historical beginnings for both artists. Jonny was 15, and Kenny was just 18. Yet, they both had local recognition 2 or 3 years before signing to majors for their first albums. BB King once said: “When I was young, I didn’t play like I do today. So these kids are starting at the height that I’ve reached. Think what they might do over time. ”
Kenny Wayne Shepherd comes from Louisiana as Tab Benoit. His guitar playing has always been influenced by the southern vibes, from the delta Blues to Stevie Ray Vaughan. Some critic said “His music shines like a light on the original blues and forging ahead with his own modern twist on a classic sound he has embodied since his teens”. For many, KWS is in a certain way the new SRV. He is particularly brilliant when covering Hendrix / Stevie Ray’s anthems like “Voodoo Child”. This hybrid between Hendrix’s version and Stevie Ray Vaughan’s cover clearly illustrates who Shepherd’s two main influences are. He met Stevie Ray Vaughan at 7 and shared the stage with New Orleans legend Bryan Lee at 13.
With his Stratocasters, Kenny delivers amazing solos with different techniques that reminds us of the late SRV of course. He always seems quite relaxed while playing, even during the most difficult arpeggios. In the daily life, Kenny is married to Hannah Gibson, Mel Gibson’s elder daughter, and they have three children. Kenny’s hobby is to buy collection cars.
Kenny and Jonny both signed to European label Mascot Provogue in order to enlarge their audience outside of the US. Five-time Grammy-nominated multi-platinum selling Kenny Wayne Shepherd released his last record, “Goin’ Home”, on May, 2014 through the new label.
Like Jonny, he performed a European summer tour on 2014. Shepherd’s band is truly a who’s who in rock and blues. In addition to longtime vocalist Noah Hunt, the band features drummer Chris Layton from Stevie Ray Vaughan former band, ex-Firm bassist Tony Franklin and keyboardist Riley Osbourn from Willie Nelson’s band.

Curiously, Jonny and Kenny quite never played together. They did a few Experience Hendrix tours across the USA and Canada together, but we haven’t heard about them playing together on stage yet. We’ve been dreaming about our guys playing together for years, so when we heard they would be playing a dozen shows together we stayed open-mouthed !
